EB Cargo Bad Service and Partial Refund

As I had mentioned before, I contracted through Shiply a freight forwarder to bring me the crate with my kit car. I contracted collection and delivery door-to-door and stated I needed equipment to load and unload the 650Kg crate to/from the transport.

EB Cargo (http://www.ebcargo.co.uk/) from Tamworth bid a very low price and they later revised it to more than double. As I posted on the 2nd August, they failed to provide lifting equipment on collection and Steve from Aries had to save the day getting a forklift.
If any readers have noticed, on the 11th August I had to pick the kit from a warehouse instead of having it delivered on my doorstep, as agreed and paid for. The reason was that EB Cargo stated, after the kit was already in transit, that they were not providing proper lifting equipment on delivery. Additionally, if I wanted to have that equipment, I would have to pay additional 210£. So I talked with the Portuguese transportation company and arranged to collect myself from their warehouse.

After having the kit, I tried to negotiate with EB Cargo for a refund for contracted but not delivered services (the lifting equipment). After all. they bumped the price to more than double for the equipment... They refused to give me the 315£ refund I wanted and would not accept the compromise I proposed of returning 190£ that was the difference between their price and what DHL would charge me for the same level of service (no equipment on collection, delivery to a warehouse near Lisbon). That compromise was based on the fact that, if they had told me that the 505£ didn't include equipment, I would have declined and gone for DHL. EB Cargo's manager named Brian Keates was almost abusive declining any responsibility, saying I had no reason and stating they would not refund more than 60£, the amount pertaining to the transport between Montijo and Lisbon, that I didn't get.

I then filed a complain through Paypal but they closed it immediately since they don't mediate service complaints.

My last chance was to complain directly to VISA. I filed the complain there, had to write a detailed document with my reasoning, scanned documents, emails and pictures. It was a 10 page document. I requested the 315£ refund but stated I would be OK with the compromise amount of 190£ refund. VISA later sent me EB Cargo's reply where they said they had provided 95% of the contracted service and as such would only refund 60£. VISA asked if I had anything to add. I rewrote a summary of my first document and stated that the percentage of delivered service was less. I also stated again my compromise amount.

Today VISA ruled the verdict and I was refunded 190£ through a charge back. I'm very happy! Not as much because of the money  but mostly because EB Cargo was not serious on this matter and wrongs have been made right with the ruling. I would love to have seen Brian Keates face when he found out he's shaddy business actions had come back to bit his wallet.

Just to show two other actions EB Cargo and Brian Keates did that were shaddy...
1) When I gave them the date to collect the crate, he asked for the final crate dimensions. It was a bit bigger than stated before and he bumped the price around 30£. Seems fair to me. But he didn't give the new dimensions to the transportation companies, thus he pocketed that amount. I found that out because on the release form from the Portuguese transportation company the crate dimensions were the old ones.
2) When Brian sent me the email saying EB Cargo would charge me additional 210£ for proper equipment to download the crate from the truck at my doorstep, he was saying that it was the transport company demanding. He sent the full email history exchanged between EB Cargo, RH and Rangel. But he manually edited the company's price conversion from € to £ in a way that would make him pocket 20£ more. It's fare for him to have his margin on top of all services he would resell me, but not hide that margin, specially when it was a service that supposedly was already included...

So, final note... Never do business with EB Cargo (http://www.ebcargo.co.uk/) from Tamworth. As a freight forwarder, they acted shaddy and were not professional. Great I paid with VISA, otherwise I would have no way to avoid their scam.
Positive note to RH and Rangel, the UK and Portuguese transport companies that belong to the System Alliance Europe group of transport companies. The people from Rangel were also great to allow me to occupy a cargo bay on their enormous warehouse, for a whole morning, where I could open the crate and move it to my rented van.

  1. THanks for the info on this company. Just sitting here considering the tempting offer from EBcargo for a removal job I posted on uship. This company (and the next on my list both failed the [Company] fraud scam Google search...

This guy also deals in computers from what I can gather: http://www.adcastle.co.uk/name-and-shame-mr-mrs-lies.html

Thanks again for putting the info up.

  2. Hello, Rodney!
I'm happy to know my story helped at least one person. The episode with me made me suffer a hard time and noone deserves it.
Good luck with your removal and everything else!

  3. Good to find this, am just watching Watchdog on TV and remembering my awful experience with EB Cargo last December. I never did give them negative feedback on Shipley, I just wanted it all to go away. So the TV program got we wondering about their fate and here I find your very justified account of their shambolic service, experienced just before I had my own unfortunate run-in with them.
I had a few domestic units to move from London to Northern Ireland and went with EB Cargo's bid, it wasn't the cheapest but it worked with my schedule. I flew to Ireland and had a call from my partner who had taken the day off work to carry the goods down 6 floors to be outside as required. My partner was fuming because the lorry driver refused to take his vehicle up the driveway. We live in a 218 flats capacity housing estate with a big avenue on a dual carriageway. We often see the same size Argos and Ikea lorries make deliveries there. The driver was being a jobsworth and refused to enter the property saying there was not enough space. I contacted EB Cargo and they said they would send another smaller lorry later in the week and we would have to pay for this. I insisted they absorb the charge as it was through no fault of our own that they assigned a large vehicle to the job for a few boxes. They referred to a contract that didn't exist and was never emailed to me. Brian Keates was particularly rude and unprofessional and even suggested that my partner was as 'happy as larry with the rearrangement', which I knew for a fact he was not relishing the thought of taking another day off work and paying an extra £60, not to mention carrying everything back up to the flat then down again.
I had no choice, EB Cargo told me I wouldn't get my money back if I cancelled the job so we did what we had to do. Two weeks later and it still hadn't arrived, I phoned to ask them where it was in Ireland and they put me onto a Dublin shipping company. They had no trace of my account so I called EB Cargo back and asked for a reference number. Brian lost the plot and said 'I'm not being funny right, but you've been a pain in the arse from the beginning!' I couldn't talk to the horrid man for another minute so I passed him to my mother. She had to listen to him abuse me while she reasoned with him most diplomatically to get the shipping details and reference number. I then filed a complaint through Shipley and Brian Keates 'manager' (his wife Emma) emailed the details. After contacting the shipping company which was actually located in Belfast, Northern Ireland, we were told we could have the goods at any time, regardless of the snow, we only had to call them to arrange a delivery!
This is a husband and wife team operating from home with only a mobile phone listed on their website. I really thought I wouldn't see my stuff again and knew that if there was any problem that EB would be completely unaccountable, unhelpful and horribly rude.
Sorry for trolling your blog wall, I had to get that off my chest!

  4. Hello, Irene

Thank you for your story. Glad you got it off your chest and posted it here.
One of the 3 top keywords that get people from Google to this blog is "ebcargo". If with the testimonies here posted we can save a few people from suffering as we did, it will be worth it!
Glad it worked out for you in the end.
    Take care,

  5. Hello there,

I would like to back up the comments up of previous reviewers of eb-cargo and there terrible service & rude staff members.

I like others accepted a bid by eb-cargo to collect a pair of Antique lights. It was only after accepting their offer - I was asked to box & bubble wrap the lights and attach a DHL parcel label emailed to me. The main reason I listed these Antique items on Shiply was that I required a real courier - man with a van - not a parcel courier as the items are delicate & fragile.

*I could have arranged DHL myself via a parcel website for half the price. They just subcontract work and make a fat profit on the true cost. (I paid £55 for there service via DHL which true cost was about £10 - plus they expected me to buy packaging materials too!)

After finding out DHL were arranged for the job - I promptly cancelled - but was charged an admin fee of £20. As they take you money up front, they effectively hold you to ransom and are completely un-regulated by Shiply which is completely wrong.

My advice: Avoid like the plague and asked plenty of questions on the type of courier the company uses before accepting. Review all feedback intensely too!

    Good luck to all.

    1. Hello, John

Thank you for posting your story. Good for you that you cancelled the contract. Those 20£ lost represents less headaches in the following weeks, so it was worth it.

By the way, with me EB Cargo said that the initial amount we pay on Shiply when accepting a contract is Shiply's fee and that they receive no money. To the point that they charged me that money again. Naturally, that was part of the amount I got refunded when I received the difference between what EBCargo cost me and DHL would have cost me.

Good luck getting a proper carrier for your Antiques and thank you for sharing!

  6. These guys are trading as "ebuk" on Shiply now, but I am assuming they change their name frequently on Shiply to mask they're trail. FYI, It is SHIPLY themselves which pocket the deposit you pay, not the courier. The couriers don't get a penny until you settle up the remaining amount with them. Of course Shiply make you believe the courier is getting the deposit, as it doesn't want people to know how much of a killing it is making.

  7. You wont belive my experiance with EB Cargo / EBUK. I bought from many differant auctions in the UK & put up a job on the Any Van website its like the shiply website I guess.
I posted 6 jobs all up & even though EB Cargo was more expensive on most of the jobs I gave them all the jobs so they will see me as a good customer & they would then do good by me. What a joke 50 days onwards I am still waiting for 4 of the jobs to be delivered!! They say they lost my $1000 Gold coin witch is a 1 only coin! They said I could acept $20 refund if thats ok, WHAT THE HELL???? On their advertisment on their page it says they have insurance for $250000 pounds. I have told them I would go to the police if they dont send but they replyed back saying thats to harsh & they are not dodgy??? In my 40 years of life I have never been so shocked at all angles of their dealings!! I would be ashamed of this dealings if I was to be half as bad as this company.
On the TNT pick up docket from my missing coin it was addressed to Brian Keates at 100 High Street, Polesworth, Tamworth, Staffordshire UK PH: 07970271613.
Im glad they are not in Australia near me or I would not hold back my anger!!!!!!!
Fire & Brinstone!!!!!!!!!!!!! Boy am I PISSED!!!!!!! I was so worried after it was 40 days that they hadent picked up 1 lot from the Auction, I emailed EB Cargo to tell them not to pick it up & they said the would only do a partial refund of the payment for that pick up. Guess what I havent recieved the partial refund & they have my goods & they are asking for more money????????????????????? WHAT THEEEEEEEEEEEE????>
NO ONE USE THIS THIEVING COMPANY!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. Hello, EBCargo. I accepted your comment on this post because I believe in the right to defend yourself.

You can say that you do "perfect" jobs. Problem is people that come here and complain. And other complains I found while looking on the net.

And, in my case, DHL could have been as helpful as you were, but nicer and for less money. They just didn't lie to me about providing lifting equipment just to get the job. And so, unfortunately, you got it. And I bet you still made some profit out of it, despite the chargeback I was given.

  9. I also have fallen foul of EB Cargo! Posted a job on 'Any Van' to collect a camera I had left behind in Tunisia. EB Cargo accepted the job, and likewise I've paid them up front. It dragged on for weeks, and weeks due to EB Cargo being inept, and Tunisian bureaucracy!!!

Yet surely, a 'professional' company, would have known about all of these 'problems' before accepting such a job, or at least not accepted to do a job if they weren't sure they could complete? Or am I asking just too much?

Likewise, they have kept more than half of the money I sent them for 'charges'. I am still requesting a break down of these 'charges' and the matter is with Trading Standards.

    1. Thank you for sharing your story! And good luck getting at least the camera back.
I'm amazed how, after all these years and so many bad reviews, EB Cargo is still in business...

  10. please never use Ebcargo again! It's the worst company ever. It's just robbery. After I accepted the offer on Uship they increased the price twice. They knew I would accept it because I was in a time rush. You would hope that the delicate pool table would arrive in one piece from the UK to south of france. Well that was not the case. It wasn't even tied down in the truck. It had holes in a solid wooden pool table…. If I had read those reviews read earlier I would have never used them.

    1. I'm very sorry to read about this problem.
If it makes you feel better, when I used them I looked for feedback online and found just one negative, from a Toyota (?) club that ordered parts from IE to the UK and received them in bad state. And I went with them anyway because I thought that a "one-unhappy-customer" was acceptable... :(
I hope you manage to get some compensation for your losses!

  11. Ebcargo picked up an antique french table for me after I accepted their offer of £188. It arrived from France yesterday but it looked as though a sledgehammer had been taken to it. The antique cost me £650, they aren't sure if I'm insured yet, I didn't take delivery of it as it was so badly damaged, when I asked what would happen Brian told me it would end up in a skip!! I'm at a kids to what I should do as it's evident reading these I'm going to have to fight to claim my £800 or so pounds back! Very upsetting

    1. Hi, Rachel
I'm very sorry to hear your story.
They have the cargo insured but I believe it is by the weight and so it will not be much. At least it was like this when I ordered my crate from the UK to Portugal. Insurance would cover less than a thousand pounds and my crate had cost me many times that. So I made my own transport insurance.
If you are in the UK, take it to Trading Standards. It is probably your best bet. Also try to get the money you paid out of their hands (if you paid with VISA). Hope you have documents proving the attempt delivery and your refusal and photos showing the bad state of the table. It will be most helpful!

Good luck and please feel free to come back and post the outcome of your problem. It may help future people...

  12. Never send shipments with them. They are very unprofessional and rude. You have to carry the items to the truck and from the truck yourself. They yell at you if you call them and don't answer your questions. Moreover, the delivery was days late and you can not track it. Will never use it again.
